According to a study, the number of foreign skilled workers in technical and scientific professions in Germany has increased significantly. From 2012 to 2022, the number of foreign employees in so-called MINT professions increased by around 190 percent to around 202,000, according to the Cologne Institute for Economic Research.

The abbreviation MINT includes professions and subjects in the fields of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. The “Wirtschaftswoche” had previously reported on the study.

According to the information, the increase in employment in this area was significantly greater among foreigners than in the academic MINT professions in general, at only around 48 percent. As a result, the proportion of foreigners has increased continuously over the past ten years from 6.5 to 12.7 percent. According to the study, the 132,000 additional foreign employees in the MINT professions contribute around 16 billion euros per year to added value in Germany.

According to the study, the foreign skilled workers came not only from other EU countries, but above all from third countries. Their number increased from 30,300 to 122,000 employees in the period mentioned. The study recorded the largest increase among Indians.
