The phone call that quickly turns a plan into reality took place in February of this year. The woman on the other end of the line says she still has a job as a machine operator. “Press a button.” She works for a temporary employment agency that is looking for employees for Tesla’s factory in Grünheide.

I’m a journalist in my real life. I have an order, so I’m interested in the job in this car factory on the outskirts of Berlin. My holiday job at Mercedes was a few summers ago.

Well, I’ve worked with machines, I say.

The job advertisement stated: You have completed training as a mechatronics engineer (m/f/d), industrial mechanic (m/f/d), machine and plant operator (m/f/d) or comparable training.

I am and can’t do any of that.
