The mortality on the roads of metropolitan France decreased in the month of July. According to figures from the road Safety, released Thursday, August 13, in the morning, this decrease has reached 11.3 per cent last month. In total, 291 people were killed on the roads in the country, compared to 328 last year, over the same period. 37 less people, and this, as the month of July is regularly the deadliest month of the year on the roads. A decrease related to the sharp reduction in travel in connection with the containment measures taken by the government to limit the spread of the coronavirus at the height of the crisis.
The deaths on the roads had dropped dramatically in march (- 39.6 %), April (- 55,8 %), may (- 15.6 %) and June (- 29,1 %). “Since the déconfinement the 11th of may last, the traffic goes up gradually and consistently to achieve, at the beginning of July, a higher level of about 10% of its value registered in February without the usual level for a month of July,” notes the road Safety in a press release. The other indicators such as the personal injuries (- 5.5 %) and injured persons (- 5,7 %) are also down.

This decline in mortality for the drivers (- 18 deaths) and pedestrians (- 8 killed), as well as senior citizens over 65 years of age (to 21 killed), to which it has been advised to restrict travel in the context of the health crisis. The mortality of under 18 years of age, in contrast, is high (28 killed, or + 10 deaths compared to 2019), during a month marked by the death of five children in the Drôme on the A7 and four others in the Aisne after a collision with a heavy weight. Road mortality has remained stable in overseas with 24 people killed, the same amount as in July 2019. Before the weekend of the chassé-croisé of August 15, the highway Safety calls the drivers “the greatest caution” on the roads where “17 000 gendarmes and about 5 900 police officers” will be deployed.
