France is postponing the end of the receipt obligation in retail to the beginning of August because, in view of the high inflation, many people like to check the receipt after their purchases. Actually, the obligation to receive receipts should have ended on April 1st, but this is only the case on August 1st, according to an ordinance from Saturday. From then on, a receipt will only be printed out in retail, gastronomy and other services if the customer expressly requests it. The end of the receipt requirement for environmental reasons was originally decided in 2020.

In view of the high price increases for food, the receipt is currently serving as a guide for many people in France, said Trade Minister Olivia Grégoire. Half of the people still ask for the receipt when shopping. The receipt should therefore be retained until inflation has peaked. Customers are already often asked at the checkout in France whether they want a receipt, otherwise it is no longer printed out.
