VERDICT CHRONO
Very expected, the e-208 has all the qualities to make a fanfare entry on the market of the electric car. Enjoyable to drive, it combines good performance, dynamic behavior, and a very good level of comfort thanks to a supple suspension and excellent seats. Its range is slightly less than that of a Zoe R135 (340 km against 386 on cycle WLTP), but this is more than compensated for by the possibility of making loads really fast (up to 100 kW in series for Peugeot, as compared to 50 kW as an option for the Renault) when the need arises. The only reservation is the rear seat, which, as on the 208 thermal, offer little space for the legs compared to the reference category.
THE PROJECT
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotAprès the confidential 106 Electric between 1995 and the ” iOn “– in fact a Mitsubishii-Miev rebadgée – on the market since 2010, Peugeot launches for the first time in the mass production of a car “zero emission” with the ” e-208 “. This version 100 % power 208 is assembled exclusively in Trnava in Slovakia, which should provide 2/3 of the production of the model, those levels of finish “Pace” to ” GT-Line “. The PSA plant of Kenitra in Morocco will produce the remaining third, finishing,” Like “entry-level” Pace “. In the light of pre-orders, of which a quarter relates to the version “e-208,” leaders of Peugeot is gearing up for this that 10 to 20 % of the 300 000 copies 208, which will be produced in the full year to be electric.
technology
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotLa platform CMP from which the 208 has been developed has been designed from the outset to be able to integrate regardless of the powertrain thermal or electrical, and this without compromise, or almost, on the plan of the interior space and loading volume. To achieve this result, the battery pack has been designed in the shape of a Lorraine cross, is a central tunnel with a diagonal two broad locations cross under the seats front and rear occupants. This choice has the advantage of sparing the caves on foot for the passengers seated on the bench, but also has the disadvantage of a volume and, therefore, of a capacity slightly less than that of a pack occupying the entire surface of the floor. Result : while Renault is claiming 52 kWh useful for the Zoe, the e-208 must be satisfied with the 45, the 50 kWh are most often referred to by Peugeot designating in fact the total capacity of the battery.
Peugeot e-208 © Tibo / PeugeotCette battery weighs 330 kg, but the rest of the chain of electric traction, the power electronics, the synchronous machine with permanent magnets of 100 kW and its transmission to fixed ratio being a little less heavy than a whole engine thermal automatic transmission equivalent, the e-208 weighs in the end “only” 290 kg more than a 208 1.2 Puretech 130 BVA8. This is not negligible, but it should be noted in passing that, thanks to the installation of low battery, the center of gravity of the e-208 is lowered.
Peugeot e-208 © Tibo / PeugeotCette implementation required the design of a new rear axle with semi-rigid guided laterally by a bar Panhard in replacement of the conventional axle torsion of the 208 thermal, in order to leave more space for the battery. Made up of lithium-ion cells provided by CATL, it has a circuit of cooling liquid. Without doubt, it is this choice that allows Peugeot to offer in series, a quick charge of up to 100 kW, when Renault is not offering, and even then only as an option to 1, 000 euros, that 50 kW at maximum for the battery is cooled by air of the Zoe.
LIFE ON BOARD
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotComme that of all the Peugeot recent, the interior of the 208 has been designed around an i-cockpit, or a small steering wheel oval (wider than high in a straight line) surmounted by a block of instruments is enhanced. The novelty lies for the 208 in this digital instrumentation so-called 3D, that is to say, with a display at several levels : at the first of the important information, in the second those regarded as useful, but less urgent. An interesting idea that has not completely convince in practice, the numbers shown in the second plan appearing not readable in sunny weather.
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotLégèrement oriented towards the driving position, the central touch-screen measuring 7 to 10 inches depending on the trim level. As with all Peugeot recent, again, the piano keys for direct access to the main functions are arranged below the vents central air units. The 208 also includes a slot through induction of the smartphone into the console in front of the ” e-shifter “, or switch to electric drive propulsion.

Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotEn of habitability, the occupants are pampered with excellent seats in which the seat is shown in pleasantly long for this category. Seen from the back seat, the picture is less good ; if cellars are feet make it possible to adopt a comfortable posture, the lack of radius in the knees, and with access rendered difficult by the doors very short and will limit its use to templates of less than 1.80 metres. Finally, if the loading volume measured between the boot floor and the rear remains the same as for the thermal model (265-litre briquette 1 litre according to the standard of VDA), it is reduced to thirty liters in the absolute for stowing beneath the floor partially occupied by the battery charger.
the VIEW OF The AUTO focus
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotLa e-208 is a success on the dynamic plan. As easy as little bit stressful to drive in town as any electric, it is also very comfortable, rather more even than the 208 heat, thanks to a report sprung mass/unsprung mass is more favourable, just need to take care to avoid the 17-inch wheels (built-in finishes to GT Line and GT) that have a tendency to cause fluttering. Better, the e-208 is also very pleasant on the road, even twisty, where it exhibits a behavior very balanced, failing to be as agile as what we could expect from a Peugeot.
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotLes performance show quite sufficient with a 0 to 100 km/h shot down in 8.1 s (compared to 7,8 s a 205 GTI 1.9 in 1986, or the 9.5 s of the Zoe R135) when all the 136 horses simultaneously, that is to say, in Sport mode, or by crushing the accelerator beyond the kick-down on Eco and Normal modes are theoretically limited to lower powers (respectively, 60 and 80 kW, or 82 and 106 hp). However, as with any electric car of this class, the acceleration is less impressive with the speed, which reaches 150 km/h.
Peugeot e-208 © tibo / PeugeotComme the Renault Zoe, the e-208 does not offer mode “one pedal” which generates a motor brake is sufficient to decelerate to the stop, just the choice between Drive, which allows the car to spin free wheel when the one raises the foot from the accelerator or Brake, that generates a certain engine brake is regenerative, but it applies just the same to press the brake pedal at low speed to completely stop the car. The braking system is not a problem of dosage particular.
