A briefcase and a bulletproof vest hang next to the entrance to Luis Misael Socarra’s mud house in a small village in north-western Colombia. The 53-year-old has been the target of attacks several times – but there have never been as many as this year. “I drove home from the city in the car,” he says, describing an attack in February. “A motorcycle followed us.” The shots were fired four kilometers from his home. The perpetrators on the side of the street pulled the trigger six times. Three of the bullets hit Socarras’ car, but the family man was lucky. After noticing the suspect motorcycle, he moved to the back seat. The bullets hit the empty passenger seat.
