According to the insurance industry, criminals are increasingly targeting chemical and pharmaceutical products when they steal cargo from trucks. According to the industry, thieves were reacting to “the global supply bottlenecks for these products, which they can probably sell on the black market at high prices,” as the general manager of the General Association of the German Insurance Industry, Jörg Asmussen, announced. Before the pandemic, such products were hardly stolen. Last year their share of all goods stolen from trucks was 7 percent.
According to the statistics, electronic devices are still in demand. According to the GDV, the proportion rose from 12 percent in 2017 to almost 20 percent last year. This makes it the most frequently stolen goods category after “other” products.
According to the association, cargo theft causes insurance damage of 1.3 billion euros every year. Around 26,000 vehicles are affected on average every year.
