The new mayor of the city of Strasburg (Uckermark) in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is Klemens Kowalski. The 44-year-old non-party federal official won the run-off election with 60.27 percent of the votes against AfD city politician Nico Jahnke, as a spokeswoman for the election management said on Sunday. Kowalski received 1,165 votes, the 25-year-old craftsman Jahnke 768. The turnout was 50.7 percent.
Strasburg is the only Uckermark town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and has around 4,500 inhabitants. Kowalski comes from Strasburg, currently lives in Buxtehude near Hamburg, but has never lost contact with his homeland. His term of office is seven years.
The election was unscheduled and the third mayoral election since 2015. At that time, the CDU politician Karina Dörk was elected head of administration, who shortly afterwards became a district administrator in the Uckermark district. The last mayor, Heike Hammermeister-Friese (CDU), was elected in 2018, but she was voted out prematurely in a referendum in November 2022.
In the city council, the CDU has four seats, two citizens’ initiatives and the left have three seats each, the SPD has two and the AfD one.
