Around 58,000 students are starting the 2023 summer semester at universities in Saxony-Anhalt. “There are no longer any corona-related restrictions and teaching is taking place in person again. This is equally important for teaching and research, because science thrives on mutual exchange.” The semester opening service was scheduled for Tuesday in the Marktkirche in Halle.

The minister emphasized the involvement of universities in connection with the war in Ukraine. 181 refugee students from the country continued their studies at the local universities. 52 had applied for the summer semester and 300 were in courses at the state preparatory college. “The information is an example of how great the solidarity with Ukraine is in view of the Russian attack, which violates international law,” said Willingmann.

The semester continues to be shaped by the energy crisis. The state has provided the universities with 20 million euros to deal with additional energy costs. “In addition, we will advocate further support services for the students,” explained the minister. So far, students who receive Bafög have received two heating cost subsidies from the federal government. Since March 15, all students and technical students have been able to apply for the one-off payment of 200 euros promised by the federal government.

According to the information, 52,390 people are currently studying at the seven state universities in Saxony-Anhalt. Together with the students at the private universities, there are 58,377. This includes the approximately 5,000 students at the private Steinbeis University, which moved its headquarters from Berlin to Magdeburg at the beginning of March.
