In Lower Saxony, a stray dog wandered around on the autobahn for several hours – causing hundreds of emergency calls. As the police in Rotenburg announced, the shepherd dog of a person involved in the accident had torn off the leash on Monday morning. He then walked between the Posthausen and Bockel junctions on both lanes.
The motorway police then slowed down the traffic, which later had to be brought to a complete standstill. Any attempts to lure and capture the animal were unsuccessful. The dog therefore did not let anyone get closer than a hundred meters. During the escape, he also crossed the entire autobahn in both directions several times, according to the police “as if by a miracle unharmed”.
According to the information, several veterinary practices were called in and the possibilities of capturing or stunning the dog were considered. However, all measures were unsuccessful, so that by Monday afternoon around a hundred emergency calls regarding the dog had been received by the control center in Lüneburg.
Some drivers also stopped on the hard shoulder, ran onto the road and tried to catch the frightened animal themselves. The police criticized this as “well-intentioned but highly dangerous behavior”. Ultimately, the officials wanted to set up a live animal trap – but it was not used because the dog had been run over by a car beforehand.
