The UN has called for an immediate halt to the death penalty in Iran. UN Secretary-General António Guterres also denounced the “particular cruelty” of the execution through his spokesman in New York.
Iran announced on Monday the execution of a second man who took part in anti-government protests. He was publicly hanged.
The execution had once again triggered worldwide outrage and sharp criticism. The European Union (EU) tightened its sanctions against Tehran. A total of almost 30 other Iranian leaders and institutions, including high-ranking members of the Revolutionary Guards, are affected by the punitive measures.
Iran has been rocked by violent protests for months. They were triggered by the death of the young Kurd Mahsa Amini on September 16. The 22-year-old died after being arrested by the vice squad because of an improperly worn headscarf.
