Pacific Hurricane Hilary weakened to a Category Two out of five storm on its way to Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and the US state of California.
The Mexican Weather Service predicted heavy rain for the Baja California peninsula, where the cyclone is expected to make landfall early Sunday morning (local time), and for the coasts of the Mexican states of Sinaloa and Sonora.
A man died as a result of the passage of “Hilary” along the Pacific coast of northwestern Mexico, the Mexican newspaper “El Universal” reported. Accordingly, a delivery truck was swept away in the community of Navolato in Sinaloa and the driver was found dead a few kilometers from the scene of the accident. In the state of Baja California Sur, the authorities went on high alert. Ports were closed and shelters prepared.
Flood warning
Meanwhile, the US Weather Service warned of “life-threatening and catastrophic flooding” in the southwestern United States. The authority warned people not to drive into flooded areas. “Most deaths occur in vehicles,” it said.
For Sunday, the weather service predicted heavy rains in the southern US states of California and Nevada and in parts of Arizona. “Hilary” will bring rainfall that exceeds annual averages in some locations. In addition, tropical storm conditions are expected in parts of Southern California on Sunday. According to meteorologists, “Hilary” will hit California as a tropical storm on Sunday evening (local time).
