The Hamburg left-wing faction wants foreign students to no longer be taught separately in international preparatory classes in the medium term. In the next citizenship meeting on Wednesday, an application for the dissolution of these classes should be made, the left-wing faction announced on Sunday. According to the parliamentary group, two studies based on Hamburg data recently came to the conclusion that the exclusive schooling of refugee children significantly worsens their learning success.
“The school authorities must draw conclusions from the results of scientific studies: children of refugees must be taught together with other children,” demanded school policy group spokeswoman Sabine Boeddinghaus. The schooling of refugees is part of the regular task of schools. “That’s why we need all schools in this challenging work.”
In the Hanseatic city, students from abroad whose language skills prevent them from attending a regular class are enrolled in preparatory classes for a period of twelve months.
The school authorities recently announced that the large number of refugee children from Ukraine had led to a significant increase in registrations for the 5th grade. The main reason for the increase is that many Ukrainian girls and boys will switch from the international preparatory classes to the regular classes after the summer holidays. School Senator Ties Rabe (SPD) spoke of a “particular challenge”.
