Russell Wilson was enjoying dinner with Ciara when Greg Penner, Walmart chairman, called. It’s unlikely that Wilson would interrupt dinner to answer the telephone.
Wilson stated that he thought Penner was calling. “This must be great news.”
Penner informed Wilson quickly that Penner, his wife Carrie Walton Penner and Rob Walton had won the bidding battle to become the Broncos new owners group. To complete the transaction, the Walton-Penner team still requires approval from the league’s owners.
Wilson spoke Monday via Parker Gabriel, USA Today.
Wilson was traded to the Broncos this season. He will be looking for/expecting/needing a contract extension. Wilson is currently under contract for the next two years, but his average of $35 million per annum ranks only eighth at the position.
His relationship with his owner will be crucial.
Wilson described it as “an honor” that he had already established a relationship with his family.
Wilson stated, “I believe in today’s soccer, that relationship between owners and players is so crucial.” We’re not only playing for our families and ourselves, but for them as well. We are playing for the city. It is important to be able have that bond and that relationship. You can see it in basketball, as well as in the ownership groups, and in football. It’s important.
“Even Ciara and I, as owners of a soccer team. It’s important that we have those bonds. They’ve done an amazing job so far and that’s really exciting.”
