Kelly Meafua from Montauban was the third Samoan Samoan line. He drowned after jumping from a bridge into a river. We learned Friday that he had consumed large amounts of alcohol and cocaine. The analysis revealed that he had 2.34 grams of alcohol per liter. (The legal limit for driving is 0.5g/L, editor’s notes). According to the Depeche du Midi, cocaine consumption can be as early as the hour before drowning or later.

He had been 32 years old when his team beat Narbonne 48-40 the previous day. A third half was followed up until the early hours of the morning. After leaving a Montauban nightclub (Tarn-et-Garonne), he was with two friends and jumped from Pont-Vieux at 06:34.

The magistrate said that he was not pushed or attempted suicide. Christopher Vaotoa, one of his friends, thought he was in trouble as he didn’t see him anymore and jumped in to help him. The case was dismissed because of lack of violation.

This drama caused great emotion in US Montauban where the former Samoan rugby 7s international player had been playing since 2020. Meafua was previously a player for French clubs Narbonne et Beziers. This Montauban team played 24 league matches this season and scored eight tries.
