So, like, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been chatting it up with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the dude who got wrongly sent to El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison last month, sources told ABC News. The deets of their convo weren’t super clear right off the bat, ya know?
ABC News’ Karen Travers decided to grill Secretary of State Rubio about Abrego Garcia during Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting in Washington, but he was all secretive about it. He wouldn’t spill the beans on whether they had actually talked or not. “I’ll never tell you that,” Rubio said. “And you know who else? I’ll never spill the tea to a judge, ’cause foreign policy stuff is the president’s and the exec branch’s business, not some judge’s.”
A spokesperson for the State Department was all like, “We ain’t saying squat about private diplomatic stuff, even if it’s true or not.”
The New York Times was the first to spill the beans about the U.S. and El Salvador talking about Abrego Garcia.
So, Abrego Garcia, who’s from El Salvador but was living in Maryland with his fam, got deported in March back to El Salvador, even though a court back in 2019 said he shouldn’t be sent there ’cause he might get persecuted. The Trump administration claimed he was in MS-13, a gang you definitely don’t want to be in.
The judge in charge of the case shut down the Trump administration’s request to push back finding more info in the case. Last week, she gave them a week to chill, but now she’s like, “Time’s up, y’all.”
Abrego Garcia’s lawyer said they agreed to the week of waiting in good faith, but now they’re ready to figure out who’s stopping him from coming back to the U.S.
The judge wasn’t playing games either. She told the government they gotta respond to all the requests for info by May 5 and have some peeps ready to testify by May 9. Abrego Garcia’s team might get to ask two more peeps questions too.
The plaintiffs have until May 12 to ask the court to make the government follow the order to bring Abrego Garcia back and explain why they shouldn’t be in trouble for not doing it.
The Trump administration, even though they know they goofed up by sending Abrego Garcia to El Salvador, is still saying he can’t come back ’cause they think he’s in MS-13. But his wife and lawyer are like, “Nah, he ain’t in that gang.”
Back in 2019, an immigration judge said Abrego Garcia was outta here ’cause some local cops said he was in a gang. But then they were like, “JK, you can stay in El Salvador.”
The judge said the government better help Abrego Garcia come back. The Supreme Court was like, “Yep, do what the judge says, but also remember the prez gets to make the big calls when it comes to foreign stuff.”
So, there you have it. The drama continues for poor Abrego Garcia as he waits to see if he can come back to the U.S. or not.
