Is it finally going on with the Hamburg Paloma district? After years of back and forth, at least the development plan has cleared the last official hurdle: Ralf Neubauer, District Office Manager Hamburg-Mitte, has signed the development plan for the area in the center of the St. Pauli district, the district office announced on Monday. This is the successful end of a long-term work and coordination process between the authorities, Bayerische Hausbau as the owner and the district for the area of the former Esso houses.

Around 200 new apartments are to be built on an area of around 6,000 square meters, of which more than 60 percent will be publicly subsidized rental apartments and building communities, trade, retail and neighborhood clubs. “The process took a lot of time, but the result is impressive,” said Neubauer. With the Paloma district, a new district is being developed in the heart of St. Pauli and is therefore also widely supported.

“The Paloma district has a thirteen-year eventful history behind it. With the resolution in the statutes, a major milestone has now been reached,” said Matthias Reuner, Branch Manager Hamburg Bayerische Hausbau. The Hamburg-Mitte district office and Bayerische Hausbau are now aiming for final talks to prepare the necessary building applications at short notice.

However, it is not yet clear when construction can begin. It usually takes a few months before a planning application is approved. Since 2014 there has been a struggle about the design of the new quarter, which should fit in with the world-famous neighborhood in every respect. Small shops, bars, clubs, a district canteen as a social meeting point, local supply and living space for the socially disadvantaged – all of this should make the flagship project possible.
