The clock ticks differently on vacation: we skip the alarm clock, have breakfast in bed and instead of stressing out about slipping into our everyday outfit and rushing from appointment to appointment, we like to let ourselves drift into the day. How well we start the day on the road also depends on our accommodation.

Are we jolted out of bed by noise and hustle and bustle or can we sleep in and relax? Are we looking out the window at the sea or the forest or at a concrete wall? And do we feel good? There are many quality characteristics for good accommodation. When it comes to hotels, a new list provides some guidance when it comes to being spoiled for choice.

The “World’s 50 Best Hotels” were honored for the first time in London this year. A total of 21 hotels in Europe played a role in the award ceremony, with first place in the ranking going to Italy. But Asia is also home to a number of world-class hotels: 18 of the 50 hotels are on our neighboring continent. Germany does not appear.

Platz 1: Passalacqua, Italien

The former residence of the Italian composer Vincenzo Bellini is now a real mecca for all lovers of luxury and Italian joie de vivre. The 18th century villa is run by a family and offers a total of 24 rooms in an idyllic location on Lake Como in western Lombardy.

Platz 2: Rosewood, Hong Kong

You really can’t miss this hotel: the 65-story hotel has been an integral part of the Hong Kong skyline since it opened in 2019. The hotel places particular emphasis on design and luxury. This is a concept that the hotel group is also implementing at the other six locations in Asia.

Platz 3: Four Seasons Bangkok, Thailand

The “Four Seasons” hotel group appears several times in the ranking. The best of their hotels is located in the vibrant Thai capital of Bangkok. The hotel has a total of 299 rooms and impresses above all with its high level of quality and the paradisiacal park made of palm trees and an extensive pool area.

Platz 4: The Upper House, Hong Kong

A real pearl for aesthetic lovers is “The Upper House” in Hong Kong. The 117-room hotel features a unique combination of Asian and British elements and more than 400 works of art from around the world scattered throughout the building.

5th place: Aman Tokyo, Japan

Cathedral-high ceilings in the middle of a high-rise building – that’s not the only special feature that awaits guests at “Aman Tokyo”. The hotel is inconspicuously located in the financial district of the Japanese capital and yet offers a few surprises. This means that guests can take advantage of a wide range of wellness options and benefit from spacious rooms, which are rather unusual for Japan.
