The conflict between Turkey and Greece does not end. A Turkish drone has now entered Greek airspace and flew over the Greek island of Kinaros. The Greek state broadcaster ERT reported on the incident on Wednesday night, citing the Greek general staff.
A Turkish drone had already flown over this island last Friday. Turkish jets and drones have flown over Greek territory 197 times since the beginning of the year through Oct. 25, according to the Greek General Staff.
The small island of Kinaros lies around 85 kilometers west of the nearest Turkish coast and is a popular anchorage for sailors. Only one Greek shepherd family lives on the island and they run a tavern in the summer.
Overflight of territory or intrusion into a country’s airspace is considered a serious violation of sovereignty. The EU has repeatedly condemned such actions by Turkey.
Ankara is challenging the status of numerous inhabited and uninhabited Greek islands in the Aegean. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has repeatedly threatened Greece in recent weeks with the phrase “We could suddenly come one night”.
