In Bavaria, more people were recently employed than ever before – namely 7.78 million in the second quarter of 2022. This was announced by the State Office for Statistics on Wednesday in Fürth. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) presented the statistical yearbook there for 2022. According to Herrmann, 13.35 million people lived in Bavaria as of September 30 of this year, which is around 845,000 more than ten years ago.

The population statistics for 2022 are therefore characterized by the influx of people from Ukraine who fled the Russian war of aggression. More than 353,000 people from abroad came to Bavaria from January to September 2022, around 70 percent of whom were Ukrainians.

Herrmann and the President of the State Office, Thomas Gößl, once again referred to the high number of births in 2021: 134,321 children were born alive at the time – the highest value since 1991. The number of deaths was still higher, 147,984 people died in the previous year. The increase in population is therefore due to the influx into the Free State.

In the meantime, the number of births has also fallen again. In 2002, 93,000 babies were born from January to September, compared to more than 100,000 in the same period last year.

It is challenging that the housing market is very tight, especially in metropolitan areas, Herrmann said. The housing stock has already increased: at the end of 2021 there were 6.6 million apartments in Bavaria, which was 58,000 more than twelve months earlier. “Housing construction must be further strengthened in our country.”
