“Squid Game” remains the most successful series in Netflix history. The South Korean production about 456 penniless gamers who fight in brutal children’s games for a profit of the equivalent of 33 million euros captivated millions of viewers: inside. But the series also received a lot of criticism after some children started to recreate the games in schoolyards.

That didn’t stop Netflix from turning the fictional story into a reality show, though. “Squid Game: The Challenge” is currently being filmed in England. As in the series, 456 candidates from all over the world compete against each other to win $4.56 million (about 4.2 million euros) – a “social experiment”, as Netflix calls it. The games are the same as in “Squid Game”, but of course the losers are not killed.

Nevertheless, participation does not seem to be harmless. As British media reports, three participants suffered injuries and had to be treated medically. “It was like being in a war zone,” one participant told the English tabloid The Sun. “People broke down in tears.” Accordingly, the first game “Red Light, Green Light” in the studio should have been freezing temperatures below freezing.

But despite hypothermia, some candidates would not have wanted to give up because so much money was at stake. “Some people couldn’t move their feet because it was so cold,” said one participant. A player had to be transported on a stretcher. Another suffered a shoulder injury after colliding with a wall. However, without exception, the injuries were only minor.

Netflix admitted to the BBC that it was very cold on set. However, the players were prepared for it. Paramedics were also present at all times. Claims that there were serious injuries are untrue. There were also regular toilet breaks, water and food.

In the game “Red Light, Green Light”, the participants have to cover a distance, but are only allowed to move when a large puppet sings. Anyone who moves after that is eliminated. In the Netflix reality show, the participants wear so-called blood vests under their clothes, which burst when they leave – as if they had been shot. It is not yet known when the format will be available on Netflix. At the same time, filming for the second season of “Squid Game” should start this year, which according to series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk could then be released in 2024.
