The first day of the EU summit ended without an agreement on the asylum dispute. With a blockade, Poland and Hungary prevented the 27 heads of state and government from reaching a common position on migration policy, as diplomats confirmed early in the morning. The planned joint declaration did not materialize for the time being. The summit is scheduled to continue today.
Last night at the summit, Poland called for a revision of the asylum reform plans. The country demanded that a decision by EU interior ministers from early June be reversed. This stipulates that the acceptance of refugees should no longer be voluntary in the future, but mandatory. Countries that do not want to take in refugees would be forced to pay compensation.
Poland is now demanding that each EU country should decide for itself how to support countries with particularly high migration numbers. The admission of those seeking protection should be voluntary, according to a text proposal for the final declaration of the EU summit, which was available to the German Press Agency.
