The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, intervenes in the Plenary of the Congress of the European Popular Party that is being held in Rotterdam (The Netherlands).
German MEP Manfred Weber was elected this new leader of the right-wing European People’s Party. The sole candidate for the post, so far held by former EU Council President Donald Tusk, faces the difficult task of regaining influence for the EPP after defeats in France and Germany.
Weber, in his first statements as leader of the EPP, has expressed his support for Ukraine’s entry into the European Union. “The first message we have to give at that time” is that “yes, they can be a member of the European Union,” he said after his election during a congress in Rotterdam, in the south-west of the Netherlands.
