MADRID, 19 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dimitro Kuleba, has asked the European Union on Thursday to put an end to the “ambiguous” strategy regarding the country’s candidacy to join the community bloc.
“The strategic ambiguity about Ukraine’s European perspective, which has been practiced by some EU states in recent years, must end,” he said in a message posted on his Twitter account.
Thus, he has asked Brussels to take a step forward and offer the country the status of a candidate to access the bloc. “We do not need substitutes for candidate status, which shows second-class treatment of Ukraine and also offends the feelings of Ukrainians,” she said.
On Tuesday, the country’s president, Volodimir Zelensky, held a series of talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on the possibility of Ukraine applying for EU membership next June. Previously, Macron himself had pointed out that “it could take years and even decades for Ukraine to join the bloc” and has suggested the possibility that both Ukraine and other EU neighbors create “an alternative for European integration”.
