The Association of North German Housing Companies (VNW) has sharply criticized the resolutions of the Hamburg Greens on housing policy. “Higher social housing quotas are a “green castle in the air”,” said association director Andreas Breitner in a press release on Sunday. At a party conference on Saturday, the Greens decided that at least half of the new apartments should be subsidized and thus built at “low prices”. So far, Hamburg has been aiming for a one-third mix of owner-occupied, rental and social housing.
“My concern is that in Hamburg hardly any apartments are being built that middle-income people – nurses or police officers – can pay for,” said Breitner. An extension of the social commitment of apartments, however, is not a problem. However, such apartments would not automatically become more expensive after the deadline. He accused the Greens of “scaremongering and populism”.
