Nothing indicated that this day would reward me richly. I went to the Uckermark to experience the appeal of hiking. As a child I always found it boring: one foot in front of the other for hours until my legs and head were equally tired? No thanks! We wanted to play soccer, build treehouses, race through the forest on the Bonanza bike, and roast marshmallows around the campfire. Live wild and dangerous and sugary was our motto. We were young. We weren’t part of the target group.
