The earth is shaking. Very slightly, but noticeable. The sulfur gases sting my nose and make my eyes water. Behind me is the darkest night – and the volcano glows in front of me. The red cloud above the black crater rim is sometimes larger, sometimes smaller, it pulsates like a heart. Although as a volcano photographer and researcher I have seen many active mountains of fire, this elemental force always amazes me. I’m at Stromboli, one of the most active volcanoes in Europe.
