A tsunami warning has been issued after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Alaska. The earthquake occurred early Sunday morning about 98 kilometers southwest of the town of Sand Point on Popof Island, south of the Alaskan mainland, according to the USGS. The center of the quake was about 33 kilometers deep in the sea. The US Tsunami Warning Center initially issued an urgent tsunami warning, but later downgraded that warning. There were initially no reports of major damage or injuries.
The agency responsible for managing emergencies in the US state of Hawaii, EMA, said shortly after the tsunami warning that there was no danger to the islands. There were an estimated eight aftershocks just three minutes after the first quake, regional television station KTUU-TV reported. According to a local radio station, sirens rang out in the communities and the authorities urged residents to go to higher ground. Accordingly, residents of the city of Kodiak were housed in a high school. According to the US earthquake bureau, strong earthquakes are not uncommon in this area.
