A man is missing after a fire at a water park under construction in Sweden. The Gothenburg police said he disappeared during the fire and is still being searched for.
She also reported an increased number of injuries on Monday evening: A total of 16 people had to be treated for minor injuries after the incident in the Liseberg amusement park, none of whom are still in hospital. There were also another six people who were treated on site without having to go to hospital. The police had previously spoken of twelve slightly injured people.
Water park should open in summer
The fire broke out on Monday morning in the new, not yet opened “Oceana” water park, which was actually scheduled to open in the summer. According to the emergency services, the fire started in a water slide and later the entire building on the grounds of the large Liseberg amusement park in Gothenburg was in flames.
The building sustained extensive damage and partially collapsed, as rescue workers in Sweden’s second-largest city announced on Tuesday morning. Some parts such as staff rooms and cafés could therefore be saved. Although isolated fires continued to burn, the flames were under control.
The cause of the fire remained unclear on Tuesday. A representative of the emergency services spoke on Swedish radio that flammable gases had caught fire and that a kind of explosion had occurred.
