The Berlin Superior Court has sentenced an IS supporter from Syria to eleven years in prison. The State Protection Senate found the 32-year-old guilty of membership in a terrorist organization and crimes against humanity, the court said on Tuesday. With the verdict, the judges followed the request of the federal prosecutor. The defense had pleaded for acquittal. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
According to the court, the 32-year-old remains in custody. After the investigations in 2015, he traveled to Germany via Turkey and was arrested in 2022.
According to the court, he joined the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) in 2014. From this year on, the IS specifically attacked and tortured members of a tribe. According to the court, the 32-year-old worked for IS at road checkpoints. He arrested a man he controlled and brutally tortured him several times. The man testified as a witness at the trial.
