The Basque Department of Health has confirmed that two of the suspected cases under study have tested positive for monkeypox. These are two men who live in Vitoria and who, as the ministry explained in a note, “have an epidemiological link” with other cases outside the community.

It had transpired that a few days ago a young man went to the emergency room of the University Hospital of Álava with compatible symptoms. It was the first suspected case of suffering from this disease in the community. Apparently, according to what he told the doctors, he had just returned from Gran Canaria and had participated in the event that is considered the origin of one of the outbreaks in Spain.

It is unknown if the second confirmed case is related to the first.

It is also a man resident in the Alava capital, but the Department of Health has declined to provide more details in this regard.

In fact, he already warned a few days ago that he would only make confirmed cases public, so it is unknown how many possible infections there are at this time under study. In the note they limit themselves to pointing out that “surveillance of possible cases and their contacts continues to be carried out.” The two infected men are isolated in their homes and present a mild condition.
