In downtown Celle, three passers-by were hit by a car after the 70-year-old driver became unconscious. The car then crashed into a house wall. A 40-year-old pedestrian and two adult pedestrians were injured in the accident on Monday afternoon, the police said in the evening. The 40-year-old is at risk of life-threatening injuries. Two other adults were slightly injured when jumping away from the approaching car, it was said.

The driver had lost consciousness due to a medical emergency, police said. His 66-year-old wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, then grabbed the steering wheel, it was said. She steered the car around a fountain and then back onto the roadway. After several meters, the car finally crashed into a building wall with adjacent shops – after the passers-by had been captured.

The passenger was treated for shock, while her husband is in the hospital for a medical emergency. The damage to the building could amount to around 10,000 euros, as the message goes on to say. The police are investigating for negligent bodily harm. The car, an automatic SUV, was seized.
