The Rostock Seawolves celebrated their first win of the new season. After the first round exit in the cup competition and the opening defeat in the BBL in Crailsheim on Friday, the Mecklenburgers achieved a hard-fought 122:113 (101:101, 93:93, 45:47) victory in their own hall on Sunday after double extra time against MLP Academics Heidelberg.

Chevez Goodwin scored the Seawolves’ first basket in front of the home crowd after 71 seconds. As the first quarter progressed, the guests were mostly just ahead and ultimately took a 25:19 lead into the second ten minutes. Rostock got into the game better in the second half of the game and always had an answer ready when the guests had the opportunity to pull away again.

After the break, Heidelberg became noticeably stronger and repeatedly found a way to the Seawolves’ basket. The hero team, on the other hand, found it difficult to set an offensive tone. The gap grew to up to 15 points. But the game was far from over. In fact, thanks to a three-pointer plus a converted free throw from the outstanding Mike Smith, Rostock even took the lead again (85:84) a good six minutes before the end.

In the first overtime, Mike Smith saved his team with the last three-pointer in the final second in the second overtime. The hosts then pulled ahead decisively. Once again it was Smith who made everything clear with a three-pointer. With 30 points, the American point guard was the best scorer for the Rostock team.
