One day after a serious car accident on the Lower Rhine, the police announced the identity of the three fatalities. The 47-year-old suspected driver of the car from Geldern and his two small children, a one-year-old girl and a three-year-old boy, died on Monday afternoon at the scene of the accident from their serious injuries. A 26-year-old, who was also in the car, is in a special clinic but is now out of danger, the police in Kleve said on Tuesday.

It was raining heavily at the time of the accident, officials said. According to current knowledge, the investigators assume that the car near Rheurdt-Schaephuysen (NRW) wanted to overtake a tractor and left the road for an unknown reason. The vehicle hit a tree and was torn in two. The tractor driver was not injured. “An unimaginable picture of what the emergency services have to offer,” said a police spokeswoman. The relatives are cared for by the police victim protection and an emergency pastor.
