The election drama in the US Congress will not end. Republican Kevin McCarthy also failed in the sixth ballot due to rebellion in his own ranks. Nothing had swayed the 20 right-wing hardliners in his party – neither last-minute negotiations behind the scenes in the Capitol nor Donald Trump’s public appeal.

With the support for “his Kevin” and the call for unity, the ex-president had embarked on thin ice. His hopes of stepping into the limelight as the party’s great conciliator were dashed in three runs of the gauntlet by McCarthy on Wednesday.

By evening, Congress still had no speaker. And Trump was turned down by his own people.
