Almost every second German expects that the traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP will break up before the next federal election in autumn 2025.
According to a survey by the Yougov opinion research institute on behalf of the German Press Agency, 27 percent of those eligible to vote expect the coalition to end next year. Another 21 percent expect that the traffic light will last until 2025, but will still be ended before the election. Only 34 percent believe the three-party alliance will continue to exist until the election.
Because of the disagreements between the SPD, the Greens and the FDP on budget policy and other issues, there is increasing speculation that there could be an early election to the Bundestag or a change in coalition. In the Bundestag, for example, the SPD and CDU/CSU together would also have a majority.
FDP supporters are the least likely to believe in continued existence
Voters of the three traffic light parties have different forecasts about the future of the alliance. Of the Green Party supporters, a large majority of 58 percent believe that the alliance will continue until the 2025 election. Among the SPD supporters, however, it is only 43 percent and 40 percent in the FDP camp
For voters of the opposition parties, however, the signs point to an early end to the traffic lights. 54 percent of CDU/CSU supporters expect this, and among AfD voters the figure is even 65 percent. In the left-wing camp, 48 percent expect the coalition to end before the federal election and only 41 percent believe that the traffic light will last.
