The organizers of the Berlin International Film Festival have announced the programme. Accordingly, 18 films compete in the Berlinale competition for the Golden and Silver Bears. 15 films are shown as world premieres, and three debut films are also represented.
In the biopic “Ingeborg Bachmann – Reise in die Wüste” Margarethe von Trotta (80) tells of the life of the Austrian writer, who is considered one of the most important German-language poets and prose writers of the 20th century. The Ingeborg Bachmann Prize has been awarded annually in her honor since 1977. Vicky Krieps (39) and Ronald Zehrfeld (46) were in front of the camera.
“Roter Himmel” by Christian Petzold (62, Munich-“Polizeiruf 110”) is another of the five German or partly German productions in the competition. Among other things, Paula Beer (27) and ex-“Polizeiruf 110” star Matthias Brandt (61) stood in front of the camera for the relationship drama.
Also in competition: The thriller “Manodrome” by South African film director John Trengove (44) with Jesse Eisenberg (39) and Oscar winner Adrien Brody (49).
An exception among the competition candidates is certainly the Japanese animation production “Suzume” by Makoto Shinkai (49), which is celebrating its international premiere in Berlin.
The “Berlinale Special” section is also exciting and colorful. Among other things, the documentary “Superpower” by two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn (62) celebrates its world premiere here. The US actor shot a documentary about the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine for several months.
The British-American documentary “Untitled Boris Becker Documentary” by Alex Gibney (69) is all about former tennis superstar Boris Becker (55).
Former “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage (53) and US star Anne Hathaway (40) play “She Came to Me” in the opening film of the Berlinale.
Also shown is the horror film “Infinity Pool” by Canadian director Brandon Cronenberg (43) with Alexander Skarsgård (46).
In addition, there will be the animated film “Loriots Große Trickfilmrevue” to be seen.
The 73rd International Film Festival will take place in Berlin from February 16th to 26th. The complete program will be published on February 7th. Alongside Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is one of the world’s major film festivals.
