The teachers’ union GEW has decided against considerations of compensating for the serious shortage of teachers with overtime. As can be seen from the health statistics of the state employees for 2021, teachers were sick much more often than in the previous year, said the deputy GEW state chairman Holger Westphal in the political journal “Rundblick” (Tuesday). “We must not overlook these signals and can no longer carry out the massive shortage of teachers and skilled workers at the expense of the employees.” The red lines of the workload in the schools have “long since been exceeded”.
A commission on behalf of the Conference of Ministers of Education had recently described several possible ways – including the idea of allowing less part-time work than before. “Restrictions on the approval of part-time applications would collapse the already ailing school system,” said Westphal. “Many teachers urgently need this opportunity to organize their own everyday life and the compatibility of family and work.”
