As part of the demolition of the former joint power plant in Kiel (GKK), two blasts were carried out on Sunday afternoon. It was about so-called cutting blasts on load-bearing parts of two outbuildings, said GKK managing director Matthias Brock of the German Press Agency on Sunday. Everything went according to plan. A loud bang was heard twice. The two buildings – which consisted largely of steel – collapsed after the detonations.
According to the managing director, the chimney and the boiler house will be blown up later, the boiler house probably at the beginning of May and the chimney at the beginning of June. The coal-fired power plant produced electricity and district heating until March 31, 2019, and was then shut down. At the beginning of 2020, a new gas engine combined heat and power plant, the so-called coastal power plant, was put into operation.
Local residents were informed of the blasts. Due to the small blast radius, the operation of the coastal power plant 300 meters away was not restricted, and an agreement was reached with the seaport regarding the time, it said. According to their own statements, the police in Kiel were also informed in advance. Measures – such as closures – were not necessary.
