A driver accidentally took the wrong entrance in New York State. When she realized her mistake and drove back, the resident of the private property suddenly shot her, fatally hitting her.
According to the police, 20-year-old Kaylin G. and three of her friends wanted to drive to a house in the vast area of Washington County and thought they had already reached their destination. However, they mistakenly turned into the driveway of property owner Kevin M. in the small town of Hebron.
The responsible sheriff Jeff Murphy reported at a press conference that the group did not initially realize that they had been at the wrong address. When they finally recognized it, they turned their car around and made their way back from the driveway to the street. At that moment, however, the owner of the property had already started shooting at the vehicle. M. “fired two shots. One that hit the vehicle Kaylin was in,” Murphy adds.
An attempt was then immediately made to get help. But since they were in an area without sufficient network coverage, an emergency call was initially not possible. The four first had to drive miles to the nearest town to be able to call an ambulance from there. For G., however, this help came too late – she died from the gunshot wound.
Friends and family have since organized a fundraiser to help pay for the funeral. More than 70,000 US dollars (about 63,000 euros) have already been raised. For the time being, nothing was known about the motivation of the perpetrator for the shots. M. is currently in the Warren County Jail. There are also no details on the type of weapon. In summary, Sheriff Murphy emphasized that investigators do not believe that M. had any – legal – reason to believe that he was personally in danger from the four travelers.
