A DNA test could provide clarity, but Matthew McConaughey is still hesitant. The actor and his True Detective co-star Woody Harrelson believe there could be a chance the two are brothers.
After McConaughey spoke about it on a podcast, Harrelson also took a stand. “It’s crazy,” the actor said on Stephen Colbert’s late-night show, speaking about McConaughey’s mother. “I’ve known ‘Ma Mc’ for a long time and she said, ‘I knew your father…’ and it was the pause that I found a little bit disturbing – or interesting,” he said. Colbert then wanted to know how he would describe the break. “Full of innuendos,” he said.
An anecdote similar to that told by McConaughey on Kelly Ripa’s podcast “Let’s Talk Off Camera”. “A few years ago we were sitting around in Greece and talking about how close we are to each other and to our families,” McConaughey said. “My mom was there and she was like, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone noticed the pause she left after ‘knew’.”
Harrelson’s father, Charles, left the family in 1968, a year before McConaughey was born. At the time in question he was on vacation – and McConaughey’s parents’ relationship was on hold. So it could all happen in time.
Harrelson would love to do a DNA test right away, but there’s more at stake for McConaughey. Because the man he thought was his father for 53 years may not actually be his father. “It’s a much bigger thing for him, I mean, he feels like he’s losing a father [James], but I’m like, ‘No, you’re going to get another father and a brother,'” Harrelson said of Colbert. “You see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me and his family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him,” he said.
