Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer completely surprisingly reached the semi-finals in doubles at the Australian Open. The two German tennis professionals prevailed in Melbourne against the number seven seeded duo Hugo Nys from France and Jan Zielinski from Poland 6:4, 7:6 (7:3).
Actually, Hanfmann and Koepfer hardly play doubles together. The success in Melbourne is all the more surprising. “It’s a crazy week. Of course I would rather be in the semifinals in the singles, but it’s a lot of fun,” said Koepfer. “We love it and enjoy every second on the court together,” added Hanfmann. “That was definitely our best match today. We improved from round to round.”
However, there will be no German duel in the semi-finals. The Davis Cup doubles Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz lost their quarterfinals against the two Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 5:7, 4:6. The duel between Hanfmann/Koepfer against Bolelli/Vavassori for the final will take place on Thursday (approx. 7 a.m./CET) in the Rod Laver Arena.
