According to a survey, cash is the most popular means of payment among Germans when traveling. Almost 46 percent of the 2,063 adults that YouGov surveyed on behalf of Postbank want to pay with notes and coins on their next trip.
A good third (35.8 percent) say they use a credit card, and the Girocard – which is often still called a debit card – is also comparatively popular at 31.1 percent. For this question, participants were able to select several of the given answer options.
A majority of 31.4 percent of all respondents consider cash to be the safest means of payment abroad. In the survey carried out from January 12th to 15th this year, the credit card (27 percent) ranks just behind, ahead of the Girocard (11.3 percent).
Many people carry cash in their luggage
Despite their love of cash, four out of ten respondents (39.5 percent) say they take just enough cash with them on vacation to cover small expenses.
7 percent even pack just a few euros so that they can make their first expenses at their vacation destination. 29.9 percent of those surveyed take enough cash with them on vacation to cover most expenses, and 6.6 percent make sure that they can pay for all expenses on their trip with notes and coins.
