The manufacturer of the well-known Weck glasses has filed for bankruptcy. This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for J. Weck GmbH & Co. KG on Tuesday. She initially did not provide any further information – for example on the reasons for the bankruptcy. The company is based in the town of Wehr in southern Baden-Württemberg. In addition, the subsidiary Weck Glaswerk GmbH has a production site in Bonn. Insolvency proceedings were therefore also filed for this company. The lawyer Thilo Braun was appointed as the provisional insolvency administrator. The “Wirtschaftswoche” had previously reported on it.
When asked by AFP, the company from Wehr-Öflingen in Baden-Württemberg initially did not comment on the procedure. The traditional company has been around for more than 123 years. According to the company, it was founded by Johann Carl Weck and Georg van Eyck in 1900 and has been producing and selling preserving jars, rings, pots and other accessories ever since. The company makes a large part of its business with the manufacture of vessels for trade and gastronomy.
In 1895, the two founders bought the patent for preserving food. As namesake for the mason jars, the company’s products were an important part of many German households for decades. The company has operated a glass factory in Bonn-Duisdorf since 1950.
