Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther has defended his singing along to the sexist party hit “Layla” in a beer tent at Kiel Week against criticism. “There was a real party atmosphere in the tent. And when the band asked me to come on stage and sing with them, I really liked it,” said the CDU politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group.
When people objected that “Layla” was considered sexist by many, he replied: “We also sang other songs.” He explained that he was very sure of the lyrics: “The lyrics aren’t too complicated. It was a happy evening, a great band and a lot of people who just had fun.”

The song triggered a sexism debate and was banned at some folk festivals. A government spokesman said after Günther’s singing performance that the Prime Minister had visited the Bayern tent as part of a private tour of the Kiel Week. Günther used to sing along to party songs on public occasions.
