The Spanish survival thriller and Oscar candidate “The Snow Company” is continuing to become the streaming service’s most popular non-English language film ever. Within six and a half weeks (from its release on January 4th to last Sunday, February 18th), the two and a half hour thriller from director Juan Antonio Bayona (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”) has already been viewed around 89.2 million times Netflix announced late Tuesday evening (CET). The film’s international title is “Society of the Snow”.

The film is about the events following a plane crash in the Andes in 1972. In the cold, the survivors begin to eat from the corpses preserved in ice.

Spain submitted the work as an entry for the Oscars (March 10 in Los Angeles) in the “Best International Film” category. It competes there, among others, with the German film “The Teacher’s Room” by Ilker Catak and the British drama “The Zone of Interest” with Christian Friedel and Sandra Hülser as well as Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days” (Japan).

Netflix’s top 10 lists in four categories (for “film” in English/non-English and for “TV” – meaning series – in English/non-English) are based on views in the first 91 days. The international streaming service does not reveal other longer-term viewing figures. “The Snow Company” still has some time until the beginning of April to take first place. The most successful Netflix film in the category like “The Snow Company”, i.e. in the “non-English language film” category (called “Most Popular Films (Non-English)”), is currently the Norwegian monster film “Troll” from 2022 with 103 million Recall.

The number of views cannot be entirely equated with the number of viewers. The number of views is a calculated quantity that, according to Netflix, is calculated by dividing the hours watched by the running time of the respective production.
