In 2015, Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu (60) celebrated a global success with the Oscar-winning film “The Revenant”. Not only Leonardo DiCaprio (49) received the golden boy award for best actor, Iñárritu himself also triumphed in the “Best Director” category. A year earlier, the filmmaker received a total of three Oscars for “Birdman,” and in 2018 he received an Oscar for the VR short film “Flesh and Sand” in the “Special Achievement Award” category. Afterwards things became quieter around him.
Now, however, the director is back in the spotlight with a bang: none other than Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise (61) will take on the leading role in the upcoming Iñárritu production. A spokesman for the actor confirmed this to “People” magazine. Not much is known about the planned project yet; the plot of the film is currently being kept strictly under wraps. All that is known is that, in addition to Iñárritu, the screenwriters Sabina Berman (68), Alexander Dinelaris (55) and Nicolás Giacobone (49) are also there. Iñárritu previously worked with Giacobone and Dinelaris on “Birdman.”
Meanwhile, “The Hollywood Reporter” also confirmed the joint project. Discussions with Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are already underway. Deadline magazine also reports that Cruise himself will also be on board as a producer. It was only announced in January that Tom Cruise signed a strategic contract with Warner Bros. He will take on original and franchise productions for the company.
Cruise continues to be one of the busiest people in Hollywood. In addition to the rumors surrounding Iñárritu and the Warner Bros. deal, it already seems certain that a “Top Gun 3” is being worked on behind the scenes. Although Tom Cruise himself has not yet commented on another sequel, his fellow actor Miles Teller (37) has already confirmed corresponding discussions.
