Due to construction work in Westerland on Sylt, there will be no car trains running between the mainland and the island for three days next week. The Syltshuttle of Deutsche Bahn will be affected all day from Tuesday (March 12th) to Thursday (March 14th), the Syltshuttle announced on its website. “Please take these three days of total loss into account when planning your trip.”
The blue car train from competitor RDC Deutschland also announced that no car trains could drive to Sylt. Travelers with vehicles can still take the ferry to Sylt via Denmark.
Replacement rail service from Morsum
In addition, the regional trains run from Monday 11 p.m. to Friday 4 a.m. only to or from Morsum and will be replaced by buses to/from Westerland, as Deutsche Bahn announced.
The background is the modernization of the marsh railway line from Hamburg to Sylt. After the investment offensive for the renovation of the marsh railway was completed in December 2023, the final work on modernizing the signal box technology is underway, as Deutsche Bahn announced. The electronic signal box (ESTW) at Westerland station is scheduled to go into operation next week. The old signal boxes in Niebüll and Tönning are also being replaced by electronic signal box technology.
