In the Elmschenhagen district of Kiel, specialists have begun defusing four aerial bombs from the Second World War. At 12:40 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the police reported that the first two bombs had been successfully defused. The area was evacuated on Sunday morning. The specialists started their work late because not everyone had left the exclusion zone. Four American aerial bombs were discovered during exploratory work in an allotment colony.
Around 3,200 residents from around 1,600 households had to leave their homes to defuse the situation. Federal Highway 76 was also affected and was temporarily closed.
According to the police, there are no hospitals or retirement homes in the affected area. However, the fire brigade and rescue service helped several people, some of whom were bedridden or not able to walk well, to leave their homes. The police provide information about the status of the operation on Instagram, Facebook and the platform X (formerly Twitter).
According to the Kiel police, four World War II bombs were defused in one day in August 2015. Back then in the Wellingdorf district.
