Accidents with injuries occurred in several parts of Germany due to hail and heavy rain. Several vehicles were involved in the accidents on both the Autobahn 2 in North Rhine-Westphalia and the A5 in Baden-Württemberg – seven people were injured in each case.

In Bavaria there were three people injured in several accidents on the A9 in Upper Franconia. The wintry weather also caused problems in Swabia and the north of Upper Bavaria.

Accidents involving 14 cars and seven injuries occurred on the A2 in North Rhine-Westphalia. Early on Thursday morning, the police reported nine injuries. According to police, a 29-year-old was seriously injured. On Wednesday evening he was driving his car too fast for the weather conditions. Between Oelde and Herzebrock-Clarholz he hit another car and further collisions occurred.

In western Baden-Württemberg, seven people were slightly injured in 13 accidents on the A5 due to heavy rain, hail, sleet and icy roads. A total of 20 vehicles with 30 passengers were involved in the accidents near Rastatt, Appenweier and Ettenheim from Wednesday evening until the early hours of the morning. There were collisions involving multiple vehicles as well as accidents involving just one car. The property damage amounts to around 230,000 euros, the police said. The A5 near Appenweier was temporarily completely closed in the south after the accidents, but it was reportedly free again in the morning.

The cold snap also had an impact on traffic in Switzerland south of Konstanz on Lake Constance. The police there temporarily closed the A7 motorway completely after accidents on icy roads. The approximately 40 kilometer long section between Kreuzlingen just behind the German border near Konstanz and Attikon further west was affected. Three people were injured in accidents. It snowed in Zurich today.

The German Weather Service (DWD) reported that dangerous weather situations could continue to occur in the coming days: “After the start of the second meteorological month of spring was at summer levels in some areas, it is now too cool and in some cases there is even snowfall Air frost on the agenda.”
